Computer Burp Forces Lufthansa Cancellations

Affected Star Alliance Partners, Too

Some 6,000 passengers across Europe were stranded for a time when Lufthansa's check-in computer system went belly-up Thursday.

"Lufthansa regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers," the airline said as exasperated employees filled out each ticket by hand. Lines quickly grew in terminals across the continent and, eventually, about 60 flights were cancelled.

Star Alliance workers said other airlines -- Poland's LOT, Britain's bmi, and Austrian Airlines -- were all affected by the computer debacle.

A Lufthansa employee denied speculation that the problem was caused by a computer virus. Instead, the employee told Reuters that the airline had installed a new program Wednesday night, leading to the crash.
