American Takes Delivery of its 1000th Mainline Aircraft

Milestone Affirms Its Standing As the Largest Commercial Airline in the World

American Airlines entered the commercial aviation world with its first aircraft, a Fairchild FC-2, in the 1930s. Now, almost a century later, the carrier has further solidified its stance as the world’s largest airline by taking delivery of its 1,000th mainline aircraft: a Boeing 787-9.

The milestone aircraft is entering service on long-haul and high-demand routes, including Chicago to London, Chicago to Los Angeles, and Philadelphia to London. It is one of eight that American has received since April, though a total of 30 are on order. The fleet expansion aims to assist the carrier’s international growth strategies, allowing it to serve routes from  Dallas–Fort Worth to Auckland, Brisbane, and Buenos Aires.

American also says the new jets will expand its premium Flagship Suite product, which offers lie-flat seating with privacy doors, wireless charging, and upgraded in-flight amenities.

“We are excited to grow our fleet, adding even more aircraft that offer customers a premium travel experience,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “Looking forward to our next 100 years, we are focused on elevating and reimagining the onboard cabin experience along with every aspect of the customer travel journey.”

The delivery keeps American at the top of the global airline rankings. According to flight tracking data, the carrier’s total fleet stands at 1,569 aircraft, placing a solid margin between United Airlines at 1,467, Delta at 1,293, and Southwest at 828. American’s now 1000-aircraft mainline fleet excludes aircraft flown by regional affiliates under the American Eagle and Envoy brands.

The milestone comes alongside a broader upturn for the company. In the second quarter of 2025, American’s revenue reached a record $14.4 billion, marking a 0.4% increase from that time last year. The airline also reported that it had brought its total debt down $16.6 billion from its peak in 2021, targeting less than $35 billion by the end of 2027.
