Aero-TV: NOAA's Climate Ready Nation Initiatives

Hurricane Hunter, RADM Nancy Hann

At AirVenture 2022, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Aero-News' Maria Morrison had a chance to talk with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Rear Admiral, Nancy Hann, to get an update on NOAA's Climate Ready Nation initiatives.

Rear Admiral Nancy Hann is one of the NOAA's infamous 'Hurricane Hunters', flying missions for weather surveillance in some of the most arduous conditions. Hahn also gives a heads up on the NOAA's upcoming G550, which will host a bevy of weather-specific sensors and instruments to study and track atmospheric patterns surrounding hurricanes.

She also grants a peek into the uncrewed equipment in use by the organization as they leverage autonomous aircraft for an even closer look into the most dangerous weather conditions around.

Her work supports the NOAA’s “Climate Ready Nation” theme, a wide-ranging push to “create a thriving nation whose prosperity, health, security, and continued growth benefit from.. Collective action to reduce the impacts of climate change.”

According to NOAA, "to help the country prosper, we are pursuing three overarching priorities detailed in the NOAA strategic plan 2022–2026:

  1. Building a Climate Ready Nation by establishing NOAA as the primary federal  authoritative provider of climate information and services in the whole-of-government  response to tackling the climate crisis
  2. Integrating equity into core operations
  3. Promoting economic development while maintaining environmental stewardship  with a focus on advancing the New Blue Economy
