Canadian Government Marks 6th Annual National Aviation Day

Announces Student Programs, Contests In Conjunction With The Celebration

Sunday marked Canada's sixth annual National Aviation Day. To celebrate the occasion the Government of Canada is pleased to launch the call for applications for the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) - Transport Canada Civil Aviation Internship Program, and announce an exciting new aviation photo contest.

The internship program is a paid, two-month summer work term at Transport Canada headquarters in Ottawa. It is open to students interested in aviation, who are currently enrolled in grades 11 and 12, Secondary V or the first year of CEGEP.

To participate in the photo contest, send your aviation-themed photos to the email address on the Transport Canada National Aviation Day website. Entries will be added to the Transport Canada Flickr page. The winning photo(s) will be unveiled on social media and displayed at Transport Canada headquarters in Ottawa.

"Canada has an impressive record of aviation achievements throughout history," said the Honorable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Minister of Transport. "This day is about celebrating that rich history and looking forward to the future as we encourage youth to consider a challenging and rewarding career in the aviation field."

February 23rd is the anniversary of the first powered flight in Canada. On February 23 1909, Pilot J.A.D. McCurdy flew the Silver Dart from Baddeck, Nova Scotia. The date was first designated National Aviation Day in Canada in 2009, which also marked the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada.

The deadline to submit applications for the Transport Canada Civil Aviation Internship Program is April 4, 2014. Entries for the photo contest must be submitted by May 12, 2014. The winner(s) will be announced online on June 9, 2014.
