The officers have been identified as 27-year-old Capt. Joseph M. Gautheir, and 29-year-old Capt. Amanda K Herrington.  Both were stationed at March Air Reserve Base, where they flew Predator MQ-1 reconnaissance UAVs. The Riverside, California Press-Enterprise reports that both were on active duty with the 163rd Reconnaissance wing. Gautheir lived in Riverside. Herrington lived in Apple Valley, CA.

Gautheir was the registered owner of the Yak. It went down at 1253 local time in the vicinity of the Seven Oaks Dam. The airplane was performing aerobatic maneuvers when the accident occurred.

The single engine Yak-52 was built in 1985, but aircraft of its type had been used as basic aerobatic trainers in Soviet-bloc nations since the 1970's.
