Golden Knights Team Member Fatally Injured In Accident

Collided With Another Jumper During Airshow In Chicago

Two skydivers, one from the U.S. Army's Golden Knights parachute team, and one from the U.S. Navy's Leap Frogs, collided during an exhibition at the Chicago Air and Water Show Saturday along the Chicago waterfront. Both initially survived the accident, but the Golden Knights team member, identified as 32-year-old Sergeant First Class Corey Hood, later died of his injuries.

The two collided during a maneuver called a "bomb burst". Sgt. Hood (pictured in U.S. Army photo) impacted a building on the waterfront before landing on the beach. Witnesses said he fell about 30 stories after contacting the building, and was alive but unconscious when several people reached him and did their best to keep him alive until paramedics arrived at the scene.

According to his Army bio, Sgt. Hood had been a member of the Army for about 10 years, and had been awarded two Bronze Stars and two Meritorious Service Medals. He began skydiving in 2010, and had more than 500 freefall jumps to his credit.

The Chicago Sun Times reports that the Sgt. Hood died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital about 4:05 p.m. local time Sunday.

The Golden Knights and Leap Frogs cancelled their Sunday performance at the show.
