Carolinas Aviation Museum Set To Expand

Need To Raise Another $100,000 For New Hangar

When the people who run the Carolinas Aviation Museum decided they needed a new hangar, they spent $140,000 on the components. Now, they need another $100,000 before they put them all together next Spring. When they do, they'll have one big facility.

The museum long ago ran out of space. The hanger that houses its aircraft is so small that an OV-1 sits on the tarmac, exposed to the elements, unable to fit inside.

But the Charlotte Observer reports the new hangar should solve that problem. Designed for the maintenance of Boeing 757s, the hangar should easily hold the museum's entire collection of warbirds and other aircraft, with plenty of room for the Mohawk out on the ramp.

"This will give us the opportunity to acquire other rare aircraft, many of which require hangar space before their donors will transfer them to the museum," said museum board member Shawn Dorsch, in an interview with the Observer. "We need the place to look like a museum. People don't understand who we are."
