Mid Michigan Aviator Takes Onex on First Flight

AeroConversion's AeroVee, AeroInjector Praised by Inspector Completing Test Flight

Sonex Aircraft has seen another aircraft take to the skies with Don Brown's AeroVee powered Onex on its first test flight.

Brown, of Owosso Michigan, received his Airworthiness Certificate on October 3rd as he readied his new ride for a flight on the 10th. The FAA Inspector and FAASTeam Program Manager holds ATP, CFI,CFII, MEI, A&P, IA ratings gained over 23 years in the industry, making him the perfect tester for a brand new Onex and AeroVee combination.

The AeroVee comes from Sonex subsidiary AeroConversions, available as a compact, lightweight engine. The base model is the 80 hp naturally aspirated, carbureted AeroVee 2.1, while the spicier turbocharged version of the same provides 100hp for a range of experimental aircraft. Brown's aircraft was equipped with the optional AeroInjector, a carburetor modification included with the AeroVee as a way to simplify the fuel delivery in flight without an assortment of jets and bowls. Once complete, an AeroVee powered Onex is a rousing little plane, providing aerobatic-capable performance in an affordable, compact package. Sporting folding wings and a fuel-sipping engine, the Onex is geared to fit nearly any lifestyle, whether trailering the little guy back home after a long day of flying or tying it down under the comfy shade of a T hangar.

“Although exciting, the flight went as I expected, I actually took 3 flights that day to dial in the AeroInjector & make some adjustments to the EFIS," said Brown when debriefing his test. "I set the trim to neutral before takeoff and never touched it again in 3 flights, it stayed wherever I pointed it and it flew hands off. I'm glad to be starting phase 1 finally.”
