FAA Needs Help... Seeks More Admin Personnel for Recreational Drone Tests

Potential Test Administrators Must Submit Their Applications By Nov. 11, 2022

The FAA has opened the second application period for entities interested in serving as administrators for The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). Potential test administrators must submit their applications by Nov. 11, 2022.

As drones become more popular and accessible, the FAA is committed to ensuring that the public is aware of regulations and how to operate safely in the nation’s airspace. Designated test administrators play a key role, making the test accessible to all recreational drone flyers.

Entities involved with recreational pilots such as educational institutions, manufacturers and Aeromodelling organizations are encouraged to apply.

Interested parties should review the selection criteria on the FAA website. The FAA will announce selected test administrators in March 2023 and expects them to begin offering the test to recreational drone pilots at that time.

TRUST provides recreational drone flyers with information on best practices and educational resources to ensure safe operations.

The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018  required the agency to develop a test to demonstrate a recreational flyer's understanding of aeronautical safety knowledge and rules for operating drones.

2022 Application Dates

  • Application Period: October 3-November 11, 2022
  • FAA Submission Review: November 14-December 9, 2022
  • Onboarding: December 12, 2022-February 10, 2023

Anticipated Announcement: March 2023

In order to make the test accessible and available to the largest possible audience the FAA offers interested parties the opportunity to become an FAA approved test administrator:

  • The FAA provides TRUST content to FAA Approved Test Administrators
  • Test administrators provide on-line test (there is no option for in-person testing) to recreational flyers
  • TRUST must be administered in accordance with the Operating Rules
  • Test administrators must agree to offer the test at no cost
