Georgia Kids Museum Unveils Interactive Airplane Display

All Aboard "GrandPappy Airlines!"

As further proof of a conundrum facing all parents -- that your kids will inevitably have access to neater toys than you had growing up -- we offer a story about "GrandPappy Airlines."

That's the name of the polka-dot-painted 1952 Aero Commander 560A now available at the Interactive Neighborhood for Kids (INK) in Gainesville, GA. The restored plane was unveiled Monday... and it isn't just a hangar queen. Kids can actually sit in the cockpit, and fiddle with the controls to their hearts' content.

"I like the little levers because they can pull down," said youngster Ryan Balch to AccessNorthGa.com.

A group of local aviation enthusiasts, headed by businessman Alan Wayne, refurbished the 55-year-old piston twin's fuselage and left wing of the over the past several months, according to INK founder and executive director Sheri Hooper. The plane was then transported to the museum for permanent display.

"It just adds one more great exhibit to all kids to roll play in different areas and figure out what they want to be when they grow up," she said.

The aircraft sports a complete set of flight instruments, and includes aircraft sounds piped into the cockpit and cabin. The plane will eventually be made handicapped accessible, Hooper added.
