Extra EA-400 Down In North Carolina

Pilot Survived The Forced Landing Following Engine Problems

An Extra EA-400 made an off-airport forced landing Saturday in a field in Wilson County, NC after the pilot reported a loss of fuel pressure and declared an emergency.

Television station WNCN reports that, according to Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport Director Dion Viventi, the incident occurred at about 1645 local time. The pilot, identified as 50-year-old Christopher Rowe of McLean, VA, was the only person on board the airplane. He was not injured, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Rowe told authorities he was enroute from Fayetteville, NC to Washington, D.C. when the airplane lost fuel pressure. The propeller and landing gear of the airplane were damaged during the landing. Rowe had attempted to divert to Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport when the problems arose, but was unable to reach the airport.

Data from the website FlightAware shows the plane had been flying at an altitude of 14,000 feet at 192 knots before descending to 1,300 feet and slowing to 118 knots, and then making the emergency landing.
