The FAA has published application forms for those who wish to
become Sport Pilot Examiners. Examiners are those individuals who
are designated by FAA to administer Sport Pilot practical (oral and
flight) tests and other associated privileges.
XCOR Aerospace has completed another significant milestone in
its Pump-Fed Rocket Program by successfully pumping liquid oxygen
through a cryogenic liquid oxygen pump developed by XCOR. The
cryogenic liquid oxygen pump is driven by a motor unit that has
been operating to requirements for over a year. Previously, the
pump had been pumping liquid nitrogen. Both motor and pump are
piston machines, rather than the more traditional turbo-centrifugal
hardware.

It was a remarkable feat. After his engines quit on a flight
from Toronto to Lisbon, Captain Robert Piche (below,
right) glided for 19 minutes, bringing his Airbus A-330 into
Lajes Field (Azores) for a perfect dead stick landing. He blew out
some tires, but none of his 306 passengers and crew was hurt.
To hear the AOPA tell it, some amendments are in order for the
FAA's "Flight Plan" -- the agency's strategic priorities through
2008. AOPA executives say they want a few more waypoints added for
general aviation.

Raytheon's B-2 AESA Radar Successfully Completes Major T/R
Module Milestone
Raytheon's AN/APQ-181 radar for the B-2 "Spirit" stealth bomber,
now being upgraded to include a new active electronically scanned
array (AESA) antenna, has successfully completed a production
readiness review (PRR) for the transmit/receive (T/R) module at the
heart of the array.
They're Working On A New Design And Engineering Company
Yankee Pacific, LLC, of Rye (NH), and Lufthansa Technik, AG of
Hamburg, Germany, partners in a Tulsa (OK) completion engineering
center for BBJ and other large business jets, have finished the
reorganization of their working agreement.
Astronics Corporation a company that designs and builds high
performance lighting and electronics systems for the global
aerospace and defense industry, Tuesday said its subsidiary,
Luminescent Systems, Inc. (LSI), has been chosen by Cessna to
supply external and cockpit lighting for the upgrade of its single
engine aircraft. Astronics estimates the program could generate in
the range of $.7 to $1.0 million in annual revenue with production
beginning in late 2004.
"These sorts of alerts are not uncommon, but usually happen in
airports when someone has accidentally activated a transponder.
Most of these are false alarms, but we check them out anyway. By
morning, we had narrowed the signal to an apartment, and later to a
point on the wall of the apartment where the TV was located."
