AeroSports Update: Personal Jet Update

Sonex Tells Us Another SubSonex Jet Has Taken To The Sky

For many years there have been attempts to bring recreational aviation a true ultimate ‘Walter Mitty’ machine in the form of a personal, single-place jet. It wasn’t until Sonex came out with their kit-built version of the SubSonex that we finally got what we wanted.

Now, Sonex reports that the skies over Oshkosh were once again filled with the tiny jet noise as the JSX-2 worldwide fleet doubled with first flight of SubSonex N241SJ. John Monnett took the sister ship of Number-1 JSX-2 prototype N141SJ for a short flight, which was uneventful and successful. The number-2 JSX-2 N241SJ was constructed at the same time as N141SJ, but flying the aircraft took a back seat to flying and refining its "Sonex yellow" sibling, leading to its use advertising the design as Bob Carlton's airshow bird. The gray, shark-mouthed JSX-2, number-2, will serve as Sonex's Oshkosh-based SubSonex factory demonstrator, and incorporates all the latest refinements to the SubSonex design.

Speaking of Bob Carlton, Bob’s Vertigo Airshows business has recently added the 8th and 9th events to the SubSonex 2015 performance schedule, capping-off a hugely successful year for the inaugural show season in the new jet. Sonex said they were excited to announce that the SubSonex will be performing at the annual Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show! That’s going to be quite a show because the SubSonex offers a unique experience in jet shows, combining jet speed with small aircraft maneuverability and close-in aerobatics.

You’ve just got to believe that some of those Top Gun Navy/Marine pilots would love to have a chance to give the SubSonex a try.

Sonex Aircraft also announced that Memorial Scholarships have been established in the name of their lost teammates, Jeremy Monnett and Mike Clark. Managed by the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, the Jeremy T. Monnett Memorial Scholarship Fund is available to graduating high school seniors from Oshkosh, WI public and private high schools who are pursuing degrees in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or any other Aerospace-related major field of study. The Mike Clark Memorial Scholarship Fund is available to graduating high school seniors with a passion for aviation who plan to attend Clark’s alma-mater, Fox Valley Technical College’s SJ Spanbauer Center, or other colleges for a degree in the aviation field.
