Russian Navy Tests Modified KA-27 Helicopter

Aircraft Designed For Anti-Submarine Missions

A modified version of the Russian Kamov Ka-27 anti-submarine helicopter is undergoing flight testing and warfare trials with the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet.

Codenamed "Helix", the new 'M' model aircraft is reportedly conducting operations from the decks of large destroyers, according to fleet spokesman Captain Vadim Serga.

The Russian news service RIA Novosti reports that Capt. Serga said the upgraded aircraft have a new avionics suite, as well as "special missions systems." The aircraft's new radar provides 360 degree coverage and an increase search radius with the ability to simultaneously track dozens of targets.

The helicopter has been in service since the days of the Soviet Union, first being deployed and a sub hunter in 1982. Other variants include the Ka-28 model for the export market, the Ka-29 transport and the Ka-31 model used in an airborne early warning role.

The new version of the aircraft has been equipped with dipping sonar and sonobouys, and can be armed with torpedoes and depth charges. "The modernized Ka-27M has also had its service life extended by another 10 to 15 years," Serga said.
