Improved Hot/High Performance Results in 5th 407 for the Air One Fleet

Bell Textron continued its run of LE and government contracts with the sale of 2 Bell 407GXi helicopters to Volusia County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit, bringing their total to 5 of the type among its multimission special ops fleet.

The Sheriff’s Aviation Unit, as so many do once they attain a critical fleet mass, have imbued their unit with the moniker “Air One”, operating out of DeLand Municipal Airport in Orlando, Florida. Their mission sees constant duty, 24/7/365 as they stay ready to support the agency’s mission throughout the Volusia area. The Bell 407 has become their favorite tool in the box, allowing a range of aerial operations from the usual law enforcement patrol duties, transport, search & rescue, fire suppression, and even the favorite of so many departments: cool looking fastrope insertions.

Their trusty new 407GXis represent the best of the breed as it stands today, outfitted with late model Rolls-Royce turbine engine and FADEC technology and the most modern glass panel avionics. Special consideration was made for the GXi’s operation in warm climates, vital to the Florida region. The NXi integrated flight deck boasts faster processing, increased brightness for the summer sun, and better handling throughout its operation. With the M250 turbine’s power, Air One is able to push beyond the capabilities of its older 407s, with enhanced efficiency and a cruise speed of 133 knots.

“Air One relies on high-performing and reliable aircraft around the clock,” said Lane Evans, Bell managing director for North America. “In addition to other performance enhancements, the Bell 407GXi delivers better hot and high performance and increased higher precision navigation, both critical to Air One’s mission portfolio.”

Those sentiments are echoed by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, according to Captain Richard Fortin. “For more than 20 years, Air One has relied on the Bell 407 to complete life-saving missions in Volusia and other neighboring counties. The Bell 407GXi was Air One’s choice aircraft when looking at growing our fleet and expanding our mission efficiency.”
