Airborne-Flight Training 08.18.22: New Airline $$$, Breeze Airways, Air Race

Also: Boom Supersonic, Pilot Reinstated, USAF and Aptima, US Aviation Academy

A new American regional airline is using the ultimate weapon—money—to circumvent a pilot shortage that ALPA (the Airline Pilots Association, International) asserts does not exist, and airline industry pundits claim is the greatest threat to aviation since American Airlines did away with inflight peanuts in 2003.

Connect Airlines, a division of Bedford-Massachusetts-based charter outfit Waltzing Matilda Aviation, is offering qualified pilots an eye-watering yearly salary of $250,000. The National Mediation Board recently certified the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) as the union representative for Breeze Airways pilots, making it the twelfth pilot group to join ALPA since 2019. “The labor movement is ascendant, and ALPA is leading the way in organizing and representing pilots as we emerge from the pandemic,” said Capt. Joe DePete, ALPA president. Women-pilot teams consisting of at least two (2) pilots are registering for this one-day create-your-own race, a twist on the traditional Air Race Classic long-distance endurance air race. Similar to the Race Teams, the Derby Teams must consist of at least two women pilots, and must fly VFR along their approved self-designed route. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
