Product May Illuminate Your Cockpit

Imagine you’re a young student pilot on a dual cross country, when you lose all electrical power. Your instructor forgot to pack a flashlight, and the only one that you have with you is too bright -- using it may destroy your night vision. What do you do?

This exact situation occurred recently... and thanks to FliteLite’s new product, this story has a happy ending. The young man’s father had bought him a FliteLite at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2006, and when he lost electrical power about 30 miles from home, the FliteLite saved the day.

So... what is a FliteLite? It is a hands-free, dual-intensity LED pilot light that securely attaches to any headset mic. The adaptors are custom fit for each headset model. The unit is equipped with an infrared detector, which turns the unit on and off automatically. It can also be turned on and off manually simply by touching it.

The FliteLite also turns itself off after one minute, to preserve battery power. Two AAA batteries provide up to 200 hours of emergency lighting. A new, smaller battery pack is in the works, which will provide 80-100 hours of operation and use a button battery.

During the time ANN spent with the company at AOPA Expo 2006, interest in the product seemed high; in fact, several were sold on the spot.
