Midwest Cutback May Be An Opportunity For ERAU

Two Universities In The Midwest May Cut Aviation Programs

While two Midwestern universities look at ending aviation programs as cost-cutting measures, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is reportedly eyeing an expansion into the region.

Both the University of Illinois and St. Cloud State University in Minnesota have proposed cutting their aviation programs due to budget concerns. The Rockford Register-Star reports that ERAU, which has aviation as its core curriculum, may be looking to move in to take up the slack.

Frank Ayers, Executive Vice President at ERAU's Prescott, AZ campus, told the paper that he thinks that the airline's ability to fill airplanes on existing routes is "just about maxed out," and that additional routes and pilots will be needed in the future as carriers increase their fleet sizes and number of flights. The Rockford Area Economic Development Council says ERAU may be eyeing the city for a new residential campus.

The paper says that the problems at the University of Illinois are rooted in the state budget. The state reportedly still owes the school money for 2010, and that is forcing it to re-evaluate its curricula.

Along with its Arizona operation, Embry-Riddle has a campus is Daytona Beach, FL.
