Despite Years Spent Developing Multi-Faceted Training, FAA Issues New Guidance For Pilots Only

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) expressed disappointment with the exclusion of flight attendants from the FAA's recently unveiled enhanced training procedures, which include only pilots, despite years of joint work by flight attendants and the FAA on rules that would cover all crewmembers and dispatchers.

"Flight attendants are vital team members on every flight. We work closely with our pilots to ensure passenger safety; through our combined efforts, our nation's aviation system remains the safest in the world. We understand the significance of advancing safety and security, so it is disappointing that despite years of working alongside the FAA on drafting performance standards for flight attendants, these important crewmembers were excluded," said Veda Shook (pictured), AFA International President.

Prior to the draft rule originally proposed in January 2009, AFA has worked diligently with the FAA to amend the regulations for Flight Attendants to include additional training and evaluation requirements in areas that are critical to safety. After the tragic Colgan crash in February 2009, Congress reiterated that the FAA revise training rules.

"We appreciate the impact these new training rules will have across the industry. Earlier today, we spoke with Administrator Huerta on this matter and we look forward to advancing enhanced flight attendant training together in the near future," added Shook.
