Republic Of Korea Takes Delivery Of First Four AW159s

Delivery Represents Half The ASW Aircraft On Order By The Country

The first four of eight AW159 shipborne anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters ordered by the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has been delivered by Leonardo-Finmeccanica.

The aircraft were ordered in January, 2013 to bolster the RoKN's anti-submarine capabilities. Jane's reports that the aircraft were initially scheduled for delivery last year, but the schedule was extended due to delays in the aircraft's site acceptance tests.

The aircraft can be armed with lightweight torpedoes along with its ASW sensors. The AW159 platform is capable of a range of 256 nautical miles and an endurance of 2 hours and 40 minutes at 6,000 feet. It has a MTOW of six metric tons.

A spokesperson for Leonardo-Finmeccanica told Jane's that the company anticipates delivering the final four aircraft in the fourth quarter of this year. The RoKN plans to deploy the aircraft in mid-2017.
