City Council To Consider $3.5 Million Project To Remove Pavement No Longer In Use

The Santa Monica City Council is considering a $3.5 million project that would remove pavement from either end of the now-3,500-foot runway and re-use the material elsewhere.

The Santa Monica Airport Association has launched a campaign opposing the project, and they are asking airport users and supporters to contact members of the City Council to make their opinions known.

"There is no benefit in removing the pavement, and in fact, to do so could pose serious safety hazards at the airport and increase liability risk for the City, says the association in suggested language for a letter to council members.

"The airport must continue operations till 2029. For as long as it’s open, there is no sensible reason to spend millions of tax dollars to remove pavement.

"Retention of the existing pavement maintains larger than standard safety areas while preserving the airport’s value in an emergency at no cost. It is incumbent on the city council to run this critical facility responsibly and safely.

"This project has zero public benefit and is a waste of valuable city resources."
