Indonesians Told To Reel In Their Kites

Authorities Say Kites Post Hazard To Flight Near Airport

Indonesian kite-flyers, beware. You're no longer wanted anywhere near the international airport in Jakarta.

H. Wahidin Halim, mayor of Tangerang, Indonesia, is pushing a new law that would ban kite-flying near Jakarta`s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. He suggests the kites pose a risk to aircraft taking off and landing.

Violators of the proposed law would face stiff fines and up to three months behind bars.

"They can no longer fly kites around the airport (once the regulation is in place) because they could be fined 5 million Rupees for disrupting flights around the Soekarno-Hatta Airport," he said on Friday. His remarks were reported by the ANTARA News Service.
