Lawyer Admits To Soliciting Families Too Soon After Colgan Accident

Pays A Fine Of $5,000

New Jersey Attorney Richard J. Weiner has admitted that he did not wait the required 45 days before sending a letter to families of the victims of the Colgan Air Flight 3407 accident seeking their business, and has paid a $5,000 fine as a result.

The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York says Weiner paid the fine to settle a civil suit tied to the accident. A DOT investigation found that Weiner had sent a letter to the victims families early in March. The accident occurred February 12th. Weiner admits he violated the law by sending the letters.

The flight had originated in Newark, and went down in suburban Clarence, NY. About a dozen people on the plane were from New Jersey. In all, 50 people were killed as a result of the crash.
