FAA Approves Plan To Change McCarran Departure Rules

Planes Now Permitted To Turn NW After Takeoff

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Tuesday it has approved a plan to resume "right turn" departures out of Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. The plan routes more aircraft over affluent neighhborhoods in the northwest section of the gambling town.

As you can imagine, that's raised a lot of protests from the owners of those homes. They say the plan raises the possibility of crashes... and, perhaps more tellingly, that the increased noise from those planes will lower their property values.

But the FAA says the plan is as safe as the current route, in which most planes depart the Las Vegas area to the south after takeoff.

Having a second option, the FAA maintains, will increase efficiency and lower fuel costs for the airlines.
