Seahawk Down: Indonesia

Hard-Landing Helo Was On Relief Mission

An SH-60 Seahawk helicopter from the USS Abraham Lincoln experienced a hard landing at Banda Aceh airfield in Indonesia Monday morning.

None of the four crewmembers or six US Navy passengers aboard the helicopter died. Military officials reported there were some injuries, but the extent of those injuries was not immediately known.

However, officials said, those injured were immediately evacuated to the Lincoln for medical treatment.

The helicopter, part of Combined Support Force 536, was picking up supplies for transportation as part of the ongoing humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts in the southeast region of Asia affected by the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami. It was inbound to Banda Aceh when the incident occurred.

The primary mission of the SH-60 Seahawk helicopters in Operation Unified Assistance is to move relief supplies and personnel within the area, officials said.

The Banda Aceh airfield remains open for operations and continued relief efforts. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
