Avilution Brings 'Cockpit Creator' to AirVenture

Avilution’s Cockpit Creator Initiative at AirVenture Taking User’s Ideas Into Consideration Overnight

Avilution’s Cockpit Creator event at EAA’s Oshkosh AirVenture allows customers to redesign their avionics. Their setup features a QR code that takes users to a suggestion site where they can input their ideas or feedback, and then vote on what others have submitted. The team of software engineers then takes the panel home, implements the top-voted suggestions, and puts it back on display the next day.

Avilution is a software startup that has been implemented into SkyTron Avionics hardware. It was founded nearly 10 years ago by computer engineer Mark Spencer, and specializes in efficient building and modern flight decks. The company, along with its Zenith CH750 demonstration aircraft, is located at the Huntsville International Airport.

The foundation for this unique opportunity is Avilution’s Unpanel. This is different from traditional PFD/MFD displays in that it is designed specifically for VFR flight and user interaction. It has several convenient features, including large text, an enlarged view of the most necessary instruments, and a moving terrain map. The panel is geared towards use in experimental aircraft, with an adjustable mount that can be moved when greater visibility is needed.

The Cockpit Creator event focuses primarily on visual configuration customizations. Caelan Hadley, one of Avilution’s software engineers, explains that “people can come in here and say, ‘Hey, I want this thing on our unpanel’. We take those suggestions every day. We go back at night, go develop them, and then we bring them in the next day and show them off to everyone.”

The project has several General Aviation applications. It showcases an easy replacement to turn outdated avionics into a fully glass cockpit. Further, it shows potential customers how easily they can interact with the Unpanel configuration. Through the Cockpit Creator event, the company’s genuine dedication to improving and modernizing the user experience is made very clear.
