FAA Stops Traffic At San Diego Airport

Nearby Gunman Forces Ground Stop, Departures Have Resumed

The FAA put a ground stop in place at San Diego International Airport (KSAN) because of a gunman barricaded in a nearby apartment taking shots at police.

The FAA stopped all traffic for a time at the airport, but eventually allowed departures to resume. NBC News reports that in a statement, the FAA said "We are allowing departures but we are not landing aircraft due to the active shooter situation under the approach path. Airborne aircraft are either holding or diverting. We are holding San Diego-bound traffic in the Western U.S. at their departure airports."

The suspect had fired several shots from his position in a apartment near the intersection of Front and Laurel streets. No injuries had been reported.

Television station KNSD reported that police had fired tear gas into the apartment, but that did not end the standoff.

Reuters reports that SWAT team members have surrounded the apartment, and that the gunman was "contained."

As of 1520 EST, arrivals have not resumed at KSAN, according to the FAA.
