Self-Serve Fuel Now Available At Eastern Iowa Airport

Will Help Reduce Operating Expenses For Pilots Based At KCID

Pilots can now pump their own 100LL fuel at Eastern Iowa Airport (KCID) in Cedar Rapids, saving nearly $2 per gallon.

Television station KCRG reports that self-serve fuel has been one of the most requested improvement at the airport, according to airport director Marty Lenss. The fuel, which sells for nearly $6 per gallon from the airport's tanker trucks, will cost about $4.10 per gallon if the pilot pumps it him or herself.

Tim Busch, who owns Iowa Flight Training based at the airport, said he is probably the biggest consumer of fuel on the field. He believes the change will help attract more pilots and more business. It will certainly save his business money.

Many smaller rural airport in Iowa have offered self-serve fuel for some time. But KCID is likely the first of the state's larger airports to offer the option.

According to the report, there are 126 private aircraft based at KCID, the most of any single airport in Iowa.
