ICAO Seeks Member State Input On Drone Tracking Proposal

Goal Is To Track Every Drone In Real Time Worldwide

The ICAO is asking for public input on a proposal to develop a system that would track the movements of every drone in real time worldwide in an effort to prevent collisions with manned aircraft.

The French news service AFP reports that the information provided by ICAO member states would lead to a database that could be consulted by aviation authorities in the participating countries, according to Leslie Cary, head of the ICAO’s unmanned aircraft program.

Another goal is to standardize drone regulations across jurisdictions.

Cary said that at the present time, the organization is not proposing solutions, but asking questions. The 191 participating states have been asked to submit ideas by mid July, and the ideas deemed to be most promising will be evaluated at a conference in Montreal in September, according to the report.

The call for comments is a first for the ICAO. It was undertaking in an effort to accelerate discussion and eventual adoption of new regulations.

The responsibility for setting up any tracking system would fall to the individual states.
