Boeing 747 'Art Car' At Burning Man

Project Has Been Four Years In The Making

The fuselage of a Boeing 747 arrived on the site of Burning Man in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, and getting the huge mobile art car to the playa required shutting down Nevada State Highway 447 and temporarily cutting power to parts of Gerlach, NV to get the exhibit to the site.

The Big Imagination Foundation is the group behind the project. In a news release in 2016, the foundation said they were "converting a Boeing 747 jumbo jet ... into the biggest art car in the history of Burning Man."

Television station WKYC reports that initially, the 747 "art car" and "mutant vehicle" (Burning Man jargon) was a bar and lounge in the upper half of the airplane's forward section. This year, the display will include the entire 747 fuselage, clipped wings and landing gear, but not the tail of the airplane. The Big Imagination Foundation team has also cut the roof off the lounge area to make it an open-air experience.

The airplane is not universally accepted by the Burning Man faithful. The comments on Facebook ranged visitors who in past years were appreciative of the misters and fans inside on an oppressively hot day, to others so said that the 747 is what makes Burning Man an "event full of excessive capitalism."

Burning man opens on August 26th and ends September 4th.
