UAV Operator Arrested For Close Encounter With Police Helo

Accused Of Interfering With Police Work

A person flying a UAV in Los Angeles has been accused of interfering with police work after flying his quadcopter within 50 feet of a police helicopter searching an area near Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue in the city.

According to television station KABC, the operator, who has not been named, was found in a drugstore parking lot and taken into custody by the LAPD. He was questioned and released pending an investigation.

The operator will also have some personal time with the FAA, and a forensics lab will be looking at the video captured by the aircraft in an effort to determine if the close fly-by was intentional.

LAPD Sgt. Jorge Gonzalez said that the incident was "very hazardous. It could kill everybody onboard the aircraft and anybody you hit on the ground."
