NAFI, Embry-Riddle Team Up For Spin Training

Major Safety Study To Be Undertaken On CFI Flight Experience, Opinions On Spin Training

The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) has joined with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to coordinate a major safety study regarding flight instructor experience and opinions on aircraft spin training.

Embry-Riddle's project coordinator, Daniel Andary, approached NAFI because of the flight instructor group's long commitment to safety in teaching and training.  In addition, NAFI members have a variety of backgrounds and experience, adding depth to the survey's results.

"While spin training is required to earn a flight instructor rating, the quality and depth of that training can vary widely," said Rusty Sachs, NAFI executive director.  "Safety, however, demands that flight instructors be thoroughly competent and current in these procedures, because an instructor's ability to impart this knowledge and skill creates better pilots who can handle such situations.  NAFI is happy to assist with this effort to gauge training levels and enhance aviation safety and proficiency."

The survey seeks information regarding the experience and confidence levels of active flight instructors in spin training.  Such training is essential as stall-spin occurrences are among the most dangerous situations for pilots.  Instructors will also be asked when they received their spin training.

NAFI was founded in 1967 and is dedicated to raising and maintaining the professional standing of flight instructors throughout the nation, as well as providing a safe and effective learning situation for students.  In addition, NAFI initiates education and support programs throughout the aviation industry.  The organization affiliated with EAA in May 1995.
