First Flight Society to Celebrate Orville Wright’s Birthday with Free Event

5th Annual National Aviation Day to be Held at Dare County Regional

The First Flight Society will be celebrating the 5th annual National Aviation Day on August 19th, 2023.

The event will be held at Dare County Regional Airport in North Carolina, with exhibitors, aircraft displays, and food in celebration of the Wright Brothers’ first flight more than a century ago. National Aviation Day is a free event for all, suitable for the whole family. This year's keynote speaker will be Larry Tise, historian, scholar, and author of Conquering the Sky.

The First Flight Society may seem to be a relatively small organization in the pantheon of aeronautical groups, but its pedigree is more than it may seem. The Society was chartered in 1927, when it began acquiring the site of Orville and Wilbur Wright's first 4 historic flights in 1903. Initially started as the geographically named, but somewhat ominous “Kill Devil Hills Memorial Association, the Society grew to encompass more than just the Wright’s early efforts. As they grew, they began erecting memorials to early aviation, eventually creating the Dr. Paul E. Garber First Flight Shrine to commemorate the very best in aviation. Every December, the Shrine is home to the induction of a portraited stakeholder in aviation, recognizing those who continue to advance the art of powered flight.
