First Flight: Legend Cub

Sport Pilot Movement Encourages 'Historic Repeat'

American Legend Aircraft Company tells ANN that it flew its all-new Legend Cub aircraft for the first time.

This is the first aircraft to be produced by Legend, a startup company with roots in corporate aviation. The Legend Cub will appeal to recreational flyers of all ages in all areas of the world.

The first flight of the Legend Cub embodies over 70 years of aviation history as the aircraft’s design was inspired by the legendary Piper J-3 Cub airplane. Similar in appearance to the J-3, the Legend Cub represents an evolution in design and fabrication. Numerous enhancements make the Legend Cub a thoroughly modern aircraft. These include a 100-horsepower Teledyne-Continental piston engine, an electric starter, and modern instrumentation. Options include a BRS parachute, Baumann floats, Garmin avionics, and a flat-panel display.

The Legend Cub will be built using standardized and certified assembly processes, and will be sold to customers ready-to-fly.

The Legend Cub flew for approximately fifteen minutes on its first flight. The aircraft recorded an additional 4-1/2 hours in its logbook as flight testing began immediately following the first flight. At the controls was Darin Hart, Legend Vice President. An experienced pilot, Hart commented that the airplane flew flawlessly and that “operating the Legend Cub was sheer pleasure.”

American Legend Aircraft Company is a manufacturer of general aviation aircraft with more than 34 years of industry experience. The company is committed to building the finest aircraft from the highest quality materials and best available craftsmanship. Legend is a privately funded company.

Following the first flight, Hart commented further, “The Legend Cub is an aircraft designed for aviation enthusiasts around the world. This aircraft revives past history when general aviation was affordable, reliable, and most importantly airplanes were fun to fly. It is my hope that American Legend Aircraft Company and the Legend Cub will be recognized for bringing this concept back. The Cub design is truly among the world’s most popular and influential light aircraft ever.”

The Legend Cub is a two-place, single piston-engine powered aircraft designed to meet Light-Sport Aircraft category certification requirements. It will have a maximum gross weight of under 1,320 lbs. With the optional floats, the aircraft will be capable of water takeoffs and landings. The Legend Cub is bringing back the enjoyment and economics of general aviation aircraft for today’s flying enthusiast.

Light-Sport Aircraft certification of the Legend Cub is expected in June 2005 upon completion of ASTM standards and approvals. First deliveries will take place immediately following certification.
