RAF May Cut 100 Pilot Trainees

Military Analysts Say The Move Would Leave The Service Undermanned

Reports from London Monday indicate that Britain's RAF is considering cutting 100 pilot trainees from fast jet, transport, and helicopter programs.

The largest cuts would come from the air transport segment, with as many as 50 pilots cut from training, according to the Daily Express. 30 would come from helo training, and 20 from the fast-jet sector.

Officials say cutting the pilots in mid-training would waste about $480 million already spent, and would leave helicopter and transport squadrons in Afghanistan undermanned. Commander John Muxworthy from the National Defense Association called the move "a step too far."

The MoD insisted that if the cuts go forward, it will not affect military readiness in Afghanistan. "(P)riority areas of capability will not be compromised," it said in a statement.
