Wing Control Issue Caused Loss Of Predator Last Year

Aircraft Went Down During Training Sortie In Nevada

Failure of the right wing control on an MQ-1B Predator UAV caused the aircraft to crash last year, according to an official report from the U.S. Air Force.

The Accident Investigation Board has determined that the right wing control module aboard the aircraft failed during a training flight on June 27, 2014. The failure caused the right wing aileron to lower and lock, which forced the aircraft into a steep bank and then lose its ability to maintain level flight. Satellite communication with the Predator was lost, and it continued to roll until it impacted terrain.

The Air Force Times reports that the aircraft was assigned to the 432nd Wing at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, where the training sortie originated.

The aircraft, worth $4.6 million, was declared a total loss.
