Safran to Provide Electric Motor for Diamond eDA40

Safran Electrical & Power Company To Provide Motor For Diamond eDA40 Electric Aircraft

Safran (not to be confused with saffron, the world's legendary spice) recently signed an agreement with Diamond Aircraft to provide an electric motor for the eDA40, an offshoot of the popular certified four-place DA40 aircraft.

Pairing the popular DA40 with the smart ENGINeUS 100 electric motor is expected to deliver 130 kilowatts at maximum takeoff power.  Safran and Diamond expect certification of the electric motor by mid 2023 and basic EASA certification for the eDA40 by the end of 2023 or early 2024.  They anticipate typical flight time of 90 minutes, though it doesn't appear we are there yet, and that the aircraft can be turned around for another flight after a 20-minute quick charge.

Diamond Aircraft, headquartered in Austria, is one of the leading manufacturers in general aviation, and perhaps best known for its single-engine DA20 trainers favored by the USAF for initial flight training and at flight schools across the USA, chiefly due to its low maintenance, high efficiency, superb glide ratio, and possessing one of the best safety records to boot.

Their DA42 is a multi-engine personal/trainer aircraft that is often praised for its simplicity due to its use of the FADEC system, with the DA62, also a multi-engine, often chosen for personal travel.

Safran Electrical and Power has built a history with its work in electrical aircraft systems, and has operated in the Aviation sector, specifically propulsion, equipment, and Interiors as well as the Defense & Space sectors for a number of years.  It operates in 13 countries and employs over 11,000.  Their mission is to contribute to a safer more sustainable world where air travel is environmentally friendly.
