Cessna Caravan Down In Winnipeg

Pilot Lost; Plane Carrying Vials Of Disease

The 49-year old pilot of a Cessna 208 radioed controllers in Winnipeg Thursday that her "wings were icing up" -- just moments before the aircraft crashed in a freight yard, killing her.

The Caravan (file photo of type, above), under contract to FedEx, was headed from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay with, among other cargo, several vials of flu and herpes virus. The bio hazardous material was destroyed in the post-crash fire, according to Canadian authorities.

"It has crashed on railway tracks and does not appear to have collided with any other objects, houses or cars," Winnipeg Police Sgt. Shelly Glover told the Canadian Press. "There are some taller buildings so it is quite incredible that nothing was struck."

Police credited pilot Nancy Chase Allan with avoiding buildings and people. The aircraft belonged to Morningstar Express of Edmonton.

Canada's Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident.
