DC Airspace Violation Gets F-16 Response

Piper Dakota Landed At Roanoke After Interception

The pilot of a Piper PA28 series aircraft (described in media reports as a 'P28B')  got a high-powered escort down to Roanoke Airport (ROA) after flying into restricted airspace over Washington, DC, on Saturday morning. Two F-16s were sent from Andrews AFB to intercept the Dakota.

What was apparently a PA-28-236 Dakota entered restricted space at 0826. The pilot was contacted by the jets and instructed to change frequencies to talk to ATC.

"These things happen pretty frequently," said John Cornelio, a spokesman for NORAD. "But we take all of them seriously. The National Capital Region has a heightened sensitivity."

A spokesperson for the FAA said the incident did not seem like a threat.  Roanoke Police reported that the local FBI field office was investigating the incident.
