Computer Problem Grounds Delta Worldwide

Hundreds Of Flights Cancelled Monday

Delta had a pretty bad day Monday. A computer problem in the morning had thousands of passengers stuck in airports around the world, and even when the ground stop was lifted, the problem persisted for hours.

Fox News reports that Delta cancelled more than 650 flights Monday, and more than 2,000 were delayed. That was about a third of the carrier's entire schedule for Monday.

The problem was first reported on Twitter, where the company said its IT system was "down everywhere." The company said the problem first cropped up at about 0230 EDT Monday, and while the ground stop was lifted at 0830 EDT, the damage had been done.

"We apologize to customers who are affected by this issue, and our teams are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible," the company said in a statement.

It is the second time in as many months that a computer problem has forced flight cancellations. Southwest suffered a similar problem in July that it eventually blamed on a faulty network router.
