Warbirds Gather In Michigan

First-Ever Warbird Fly-In At Lenawee County Airport

The roar of radial engines fills the air as warbirds from around the country flew into Lenawee County Airport in Madison Township (MI) Saturday. The Daily Telegraph in Adrian (MI) reports the main attractions at the fly-in were a P-51D Mustang and members of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Airport manager Hazel Jacobs tells the Daily Telegraph that the whole thing started when she got a call from Detroit Aviation Safety Counselors, which was looking for a fly-in host. "I said sure," Jacobs said. "Then it just grew and grew and grew."

The Mustang is owned by Jack Roush, who restored it as "The Old Crow." It was piloted by WW II ace Bud Anderson in the 1940s. Roush parks at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti (MI). Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, who was a member of the all-black Tuskegee Airmen, said flying was "like driving a Porsche -- smooth." Jefferson signed autographs and chatted with attendees. "I think it's important for these boys for later, when they understand it better," Chris Fink said. His grandsons had their photos taken with Jefferson. "It's a real thrill to meet a real hero for a change."
