China Wants A Piece Of The ISS Action

Hopes To Further Ramp Up Space Program

A Chinese government official has stated publicly that China would like to become a partner in the International Space Station.

The Associated Press reported the comment from Vice Minister of Science and Technology Li Xueyong as China prepares to launch its own lunar probe, a few weeks after rival Japan did the same.

"We hope to take part in activities related to the international space station," Li said. "If I am not mistaken, this program has 16 countries currently involved and we hope to be the 17th partner."

China has made clear its intent to accelerate technological development, and became only the third nation to launch a manned space mission in 2003.

So far, China's only first in space -- testing a missle by destroying one of its own obsolete satellites in January of this year -- has left the world's space community on edge.

The new space race between China and Japan is set to be joined by India, which says it will launch a lunar probe next year.
