The Lament Continues

Memphis Controllers To Talk About ATC Shortages

On Tuesday, air traffic controllers from the Memphis Air Route Traffic Control Center and Memphis International Airport control tower and approach control facility will discuss both the current and future serious controller shortages facing their facility and the potential travel and safety concerns associated with having too few eyes handling planes.

The Federal Aviation Administration itself anticipates a controller shortage nationwide of up to 50 percent in the next 10 years. Timing is particularly critical given an upcoming vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee authorizing funding for the FAA and other transportation-related agencies.

A bipartisan group of Senate committee members have asked their colleagues to give $14 million to FAA to begin the critical hiring process. NATCA is asking Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) for his support in addressing this looming crisis and protecting the safety of our skies and to encourage the Senate Appropriations Committee to provide funding.
