Portugal Buys 12 Embraer A-29N Super Tucano Aircraft

First Customer For NATO Version Of Advanced Trainer

Embraer announced that it received a signed contract from the Portuguese Ministry of National Defense for twelve A-29N Super Tucano aircraft for the Portuguese Air Force. This order places Portugal as the initial customer of the NATO version of the advanced training and light attack aircraft.

The acquisition affirms Portugal’s commitment to a modern Air Force with a reliable and versatile aircraft suitable for advanced pilot training, light attack, close air support (CAS), and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

The A-29N is equipped with advanced avionics, NATO-specific comms systems, and other nondisclosed new capabilities to meet Portugal’s operational requirements.

Bosco da Costa Jr., President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security noted, “We would like to thank the Portuguese Ministry of National Defense and Air Force for the trust they place in Embraer solutions.

"This contract gives us the opportunity to contribute to the modernization of the Portuguese Air Force and to further deepen our strong partnership, paving the way for additional industrial cooperation with the local defense industry."

Embraer says it has more than 260 orders for the aircraft that recently exceeded 570,000 flight hours of which 60,000 were in combat. The aircraft is designed for capabilities in advanced pilot training, CAS, air patrol, air interdiction, JTAC training, armed ISR, border surveillance, reconnaissance, and air escort.
