Libyan Crew Ordered To Fire On Protesters Crash Jet

Pilots Eject, Allow Aircraft To Go Down

The crew of a Libyan Air Force jet reportedly ejected from their fighters and allowed it to crash Wednesday rather than fire on protesters in Benghazi, the second-largest city in Libya.

The Libyan newspaper Quryna reports on its website that an unidentified colonel said that Attia Abdel Salem al Abdali and his second in command Ali Omar Gaddafi bailed out of their Sukhoi-22. It went down about 100 miles southwest of Benghazi, according to Quruyna, which USA Today says is a fairly reliable source for news.

The plane had been based in Tripoli, and one of the pilots was reportedly from the tribe of Col. Moammar Gadhafi, according to a local resident who witnessed the crash and saw the pilots.
