Sunday Chicago Air And Water Show Cancelled

Had Been Delayed Three Hours By Low Clouds, Fog

Sunday was apparently not a perfect day for an air show in Chicago. A thick fog on the city's lakefront delayed the Chicago Air And Water Show by three hours before officials pulled the plug on the event.

They tried. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a rescue demonstration got underway at about 1:30 local time after the delay, but the low clouds in the area did behave as the forecasters predicted, and by 2:00 p.m., the show was suspended. At 3:00, it was cancelled.

The ceiling was measured at 400 feet, which made it impossible for the aircraft participating in the show to take off and land, according to spokeswoman Mary May.

The National Weather Service said that the region was experiencing "rare low clouds," a phenomenon seen only about two or three percent of the time in August.

May said that the event was last cancelled due to weather in 2011.
