Mooney Returns To Wichita...

...Sort Of

The Mooney Airplane Company, which left Wichita more than 50 years ago, is back. Well, at least, the sales office is.

"Wichita, from an aviation point of view, is the center of the universe," said Mooney CEO Gretchen Jahn, in an exclusive interview with the Wichita Business Journal.

Spearheading the sales effort will be Kansas native David Copeland, the company's vice president for sales and marketing. It's a big job. Mooney has suffered the kind of financial bad news that, at one point, led some industry observers to think the GA manufacturer, in business since 1946, was about to go west.

But Copeland told the Business Journal that he sees a turn around. This year, he said, the company is enjoying more sales than it's seen in any year since 1989. Mooney sold 13 aircraft at Oshkosh, WI, during the EAA fly-in. Over the first nine months of the year, Mooney has taken 53 firm orders.
