GAMA Hails Joint Plan For Next Generation Air Transportation System

GAMA has given a solid thumbs-up to the just-released integrated plan for the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS) as an essential milestone needed to avoid gridlock in the nation’s air transportation system.

“As Americans travel by air during the upcoming holiday period, many will see how easily some segments of our air transportation system can reach capacity,” said GAMA Interim President Ron Swanda. “Fortunately, the dedication and skill of pilots, operators and FAA employees keep the system safe during these periods.”

“By presenting this bold vision of the future air transportation system, President Bush, DOT Secretary Mineta, FAA Administrator Blakey and NASA Associate Administrator Lebacqz have demonstrated the extraordinary leadership and cooperation needed to solve the problems that could eventually paralyze our entire air transportation system,” noted Swanda. "GAMA accepts this call to action and pledges its support to make this bold vision a reality.”

The Century of Aviation Reauthorization Act, signed by President Bush one year ago, required the DOT to join with the Departments of Commerce, Defense and Homeland Security in defining a future air transportation system that will meet the needs of safety, security, mobility, efficiency and capacity. The plan outlines a roadmap that will have this new air transportation system in place by the year 2025.
