Bomb Threat Closes Down Modesto, CA Airport

Flights Cancelled, Airport Evacuated

Operations at Modesto City-County Municipal Airport ground to a halt Tuesday, when the central California airport closed following a series of anonymous bomb threats.

Flights were cancelled, and the airport was evacuated at noon Tuesday, according to CBS. Bomb sniffing dogs were sent in to sweep the terminal for possible explosives.

Media reports indicate the airport manager received a series of bomb threats through email. The Modesto Police Webmaster also reportedly received nine emails, saying multiple bombs had been placed at the airport between 4 am and 8 am Tuesday morning.

Local authorities said the threats appeared genuine... but federal security and law enforcement officials later described the threat as "non-specific," adding "we do NOT deem it credible."

As of Tuesday night, the airport was still closed.

Modesto is served commercially by SkyWest Airlines, flying as United Express to San Francisco.
