Joby Continues Work on Part 135 Approval

Carrier, Production, and Type Certificates Expected by 2024

Joby is approaching the completion of their Part 135 Air Carrier Certification, according to a company released earlier this week.

The certification program is in its 4th of 5 stages to obtain approval from the FAA, which will allow the eVTOL manufacturer to begin offering its sustainable taxi services in cities and communities throughout the US. It is an integral part of the company's regulatory trifecta: A Type Certificate for the Joby aircraft, a Production Certificate for the assembly of a series of additional aircraft, as well as the Carrier Certificate. Joby believes they will have all the necessary approvals to begin their aerial ridesharing services in 2024.

As part of the application, they have been required to submit their manuals and documentation to the FAA and allow inspection and observation of company operations to ensure regulatory compliance. In the current stage, the regulator is observing the company's first batch of pilot instructors as they teach from company publications and lay the groundwork for future pilot training. The daunting task led Joby to call upon industry veteran CAE, to develop and engineer flight simulator systems custom tailored for their aircraft.

“Our aspiration is to not just build and certify a revolutionary aircraft, but to operate a commercial passenger service that saves people time with minimal impact on the environment,” said Bonny Simi, Head of Air Operations and People at Joby. “Achieving a Part 135 certification unlocks the ability to do that, and we’re moving through the process ahead of schedule.”
